Abby Phillip Gets Her Own Show On CNN

By Lillian Searles

CNN’s rising star and political correspondent, Abby Phillip, will host her own show, “Inside Politics Sunday with Abby Phillip,” starting Jan. 24.

Earlier today, CNN announced the news that Phillip had been promoted to senior political correspondent and will be taking the reins of Inside Politics Sunday from John King on Sundays at 8 a.m. EST.

Born to Trinidadian parents, June C. Phillip and Carlos W. Phillip, and grew up in Bowie, Maryland, the 32-year-old is also a Harvard graduate.

Having been a member of the show’s roundtable in 2015 and even filling in for King last month, Phillip is no stranger to the Inside Politics set.

The news of the promotion comes after an election cycle that brought Phillip regular screen time on CNN as a political correspondent covering the 2020 election, which gained her some extra attention for her stellar coverage and analysis on CNN’s political panel.

Last January, Phillip co-moderated the seventh Democratic presidential debate, and in November, Phillip co-anchored CNN’s election-coverage staple, Election Night In America.

Phillip’s role comes as part of other CNN promotions with the new administration.

  • Jake Tapper, the network’s chief Washington correspondent, becomes the lead anchor for all D.C. events, while his weeknight show, The Lead, stretches to two hours.

  • Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room will be cut to one hour.

  • Tapper will split his Sunday show, State of the Union, with chief political correspondent Dana Bash, with each hosting the show for two Sundays a month.

  • Jim Acosta will become chief domestic correspondent along with anchor of a yet-to-be-announced weekend show.

  • Kaitlan Collins will take Acosta’s place as the new chief White House correspondent, covering the incoming Biden administration.
