AG: Firearms Report Will Be Laid In Parliament

By Newsroom

As a constitutional responsibility, the audit report on the Firearms Unit of the TTPS will eventually be laid in the Parliament.

This assurance comes from Attorney General Reginald Armour, who says in the spirit of fairness and due process, those who stand to be adversely affected by the contents of the report will first be given a chance to comment and make representation.

The AG’s pubic appearance at a media conference on Wednesday came after a letter from his office, in response to former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith’s attorney Larry Lalla, was leaked.

He expressed disappointment with “less than balanced reporting on the issue, referencing the Daily Express which front headline read “Firearms Report Shot Down”

“The Prime Minister has signaled his intention to discharge his constitutional responsibility pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution and in particular, to Section 75,” AG Armour said.

Last month, Prime Minister Rowley said the contents of the report were “deeply troubling”,  while lamenting that agreeing to the appointment of Griffith as Top Cop in 2018 was “the worst mistake” of his life.

The September 6th letter to Mr. Lalla agreed that government would hold its hand on laying the report, to allow Griffith to respond to the audit findings.

But, as Mr. Armour made clear, this allowance for response applies not only to Griffith but any person adversely affected by the report.
