AG Meets With DPP Over Concerns About Office’s Performance

By Newsroom

Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard met with Attorney General Reginald Armour on Wednesday, for discussions which spanned nearly three hours.

The meeting, called by the AG, came against the backdrop of his criticism about the functioning of the DPP’s office, which is the prosecutorial arm of the state.

“That is an unsatisfactory explanation for under-performance of the DPP. Other critical arms of the criminal justice system are also operating below capacity, yet far more effectively. We need to critically examine what are the systemic issues that are hampering the performance of the DPP’s office,” the AG said last week in response to the reasoning of a lack of sufficient human resources.

Meanwhile, Attorneys at the DPP’s office have penned a letter to Attorney General Reginald Armour, calling on him to publicly apologize for what they say are unfounded criticisms about the efficiency of the office.

In the two-page document, dropped off to the AG’s secretary shortly after Wednesday’s meeting, the State attorneys say they are understaffed and overworked, and the AG’s comments about their performance could unjustly undermine public confidence in the DPP’s office.

“We, the state attorneys of the DPP, formally express our disappointment with these comments. They do not accurately reflect the efforts and commitment of the staff at this office. These statements present a distorted view of the existing reality and are likely to undermine public confidence in this office,” the letter read.
