As UNC Faces Political Fallout, Party Chief Whip Rallies Behind Kamla

By Newsroom

On the heels of Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally going on a public platform to lambast the leadership of Kamla Persad Bissessar, the party’s Chief Whip, Dr David Lee has spoken out in the political leader’s support.

“The criticisms of a misguided minority will not take away from the hope that the majority have received from the UNC Leader’s battle to save T&T”, Lee said in a statement on Saturday morning.

On Friday, MP Rambally left no holds barred when he tore into Persad-Bissessar’s leadership, which he said had deteriorated the party’s values.

“The UNC in its present form, cannot win any election, and certainly not the next general election. The party has to be ‘revamped, reorganised and revitalised.’ Today I place my political life on the altar in the hope that I can cause meaningful change within the UNC,” Rambally said.

In response, Lee dismissed claims that Persad-Bissessar had adopted a dictatorial approach, disregarding the genuine concerns of rank-and-file members. Rambally claimed that there was often little work going on behind the scenes to prepare for important Parliamentary debates.

“As Chief Whip I can confirm that Kamla Persad Bissessar has led the Opposition bench by always ensuring consensus, by always being inclusive and more so always ensuring that our Members of Parliament are fully prepared to fight the PNM’s attack on our citizens.”

Lee continued, “From constantly working with our MPs to define our Parliamentary positions for each debate based on the national interest to even having her personal staff help our MPs with research, the Leader of the Opposition has led an alternative government that is ready to defeat the PNM.”

Rambally is the second sitting Opposition MP to speak out against the UNC leadership in the past few weeks. Last month, Mayaro MP Rushton Paray made a public call for Persad-Bissessar to call internal elections in June.

“Democracy allows all a voice, if some opt to use theirs to weaken the UNC’s fight against the PNM, we will not be deterred as the UNC and Parliamentary bench are behind an inclusive strong leader with a potent vision to save T&T,” Lee challenged.
