An autopsy report has revealed that 22-year-old Emmanuel Joseph, the suspect charged in connection with the attempted assassination of the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons, was beaten to death.

Joseph died last Friday, just over 24 hours after a Port of Spain Magistrate remanded him into custody.

In a statement last Saturday, the T&T Prison Service said Joseph complained about chest pains and was taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead.

On October 11, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Sherwyn Bruce was targeted by gunmen outside his Barataria home as he was being picked up by  officer Steve Phipps.

Bruce escaped unharmed however Officer Phipps was shot in his torso. Bruce’s 12-year-old daughter, who was also present, sustained a minor wound.
