Bankers Association: “Don’t Rush To Banks To Exchange Old $20, $10, $5 Notes”

By Newsroom

The Banker’s Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BATT) reminds customers that it is not necessary to flock to the banks to access the new 20, 10 and 5 dollar bills when they are released next Monday, November 2nd.

In contrast to the chaotic scenes that arose out of the release of the new $100 bill last year, the Association reminds that the existing 20, 10 and 5 dollar bills will remain legal tender until the end of 2021, and therefore do not have to be returned.

In a statement on Thursday BATT said: “It is important to note that the banks will require a period of approximately two (2) months to retrofit ATMs and various back office counting machinery, to accommodate and accurately dispense the new notes. This transition of old notes to the new notes will be done on a phased basis with the challenges associated with COVID-19 as an additional factor to consider; we must remind the public that the safety of its staff and customers is important to all banks.”

BATT said further updates will be disseminated by your respective bank, as we seek to ensure a smooth and seamless transition to the new Polymer notes.
