Bar Owners Protest COVID-19 Opening Hours

By Newsroom

Members of the Bar Owners and Operators Association protested outside of the Prime Minister’s Office this morning, calling for some consideration to be given for their hours to be extended.

The business owners say their business continues to suffer under the current regulations which permits them to open from 8am to 8pm.

Thursday’s demonstration followed an earlier threat by the Association of Trinidad and Tobago to take legal action against the State in an effort to have opening hours extended to 10pm.

Government restricted the opening hours after it lamented that errant bar owners had failed to honor social distancing guidelines-posing a threat of virus spread.

BOATT President Teron Mohan complained that there had been no consultation with bar owners on the matter. “Some people not even making enough money to cover the day’s operations; I would say anywhere from as much as 50 to 75 percent losses on a daily basis,” he said, adding that if some resolution is not made-  “The next step will be our day in court.”
