Barbadians Panic Buy Ahead Of Lockdown, PM Mottley Urges Calm

By Newsroom

There were frantic scenes outside supermarkets across Barbados on Friday morning, as citizens rushed to stock up on food supplies ahead of the 8 p.m. start to the two-week national shutdown. The lockdown was originally due to come into effect at 5 p.m, but was postponed at the last minute. The intensified restriction is government’s latest attempt to place a lid on the spread of COVID-19. So far the island has 51 confirmed cases.

Included in the string of rules announced by Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw on Thursday, is that supermarkets will only be allowed to provide delivery services, under an arrangement still to be arranged. Village shops are allowed to stay open, however, on the condition that only three customers be allowed in at a time.

In a video update on Friday evening, Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who is currently on medical leave, urged citizens to focus only on getting their essentials during this unprecedented time. PM Mottley said “What we saw today is the typical Barbadian exuberance with respect to wanting to make sure they’re ready.” However she cautioned, “In doing so, we can’t forget the social distancing.”
