Beloved Blaxx: Condolences Pour In For The Late Entertainer

By Newsroom

Condolences have continued pouring in for beloved entertainer Blaxx, who died on Monday after a battle with Covid-19.

Crediting the late veteran for giving him his own start in music was Voice, who pledged to pay it forward by helping create platforms for future generations of music.

“You gave me a chance when nobody else did. You mentored me and gave me a platform to have my voice heard. On that stage you hugged me and said “I’m proud of you Voice.” I am forever indebted to you. You defended this art form when very few thought it worthy of defending… My passion for our music is due in part to the way I saw you defend it with everything in you. You were a fighter. You were a warrior. You are a legend. You are an icon. You are hulk. Love you forever uncle,” Voice shared.

The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organization, TUCO, also acknowledged the continued support and mentorship Blaxx provided to the youth in the industry, saying his charisma and comradery will be deeply missed.

“The world never imagined that Blaxx’s appearance at the recently concluded ‘A Taste of Carnival’ events would have been his last. May Eternal Light shine upon him as he transitions,” TUCO said.

Fay-Ann Lyons and Bunji Garlin, both of whom shared a close personal and working relationship with Blaxx, paid their own respects.

“Sleep well my brother,” Fay-Ann posted.

“May your voice be heard till the end of time. Fly high brother,” Bunji posted to his account.

A few politicians also acknowledged the veteran’s passing, including Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.

“Dexter ‘Blaxx’ Stewart has been a regular talented exponent of the happy musical culture of Trinidad and Tobago. His contributions were eagerly awaited each year and appreciated by hordes of adoring fans. He will be sorely missed,” the PM said.

Dr. Lovell Francis, T&T’s High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa, shared his appreciation for one of the entertainer’s biggest hits, Hulk.

“The first time I listened to Hulk, I fully expected to hear something ridiculous. I should really have known better. By the time the minutes passed I was sure that it was the song of the year. And that was Blaxx in a nutshell. He, had a style that was unusual, infectious and resonant. Blaxx gave us something for the waist as well as the brain, and showed that Soca could transcend the narrow and over used tropes of woman’s bumcees and jumping and waving,” Dr. Francis remembered.
