BLACKLISTED: Three CARICOM Countries Named On EU’s Tax Haven List

By Newsroom

The Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica have appeared on the European Union’s list of countries with shortfalls in tackling money laundering and terrorism financing.

The list, which was released on Thursday, also included Botswana, Cambodia, Ghana, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Panama and Zimbabwe.

Executive Vice-President of the EU, Valdis Dombrovskis, in unveiling an Action Plan to encourage compliance, said  “There should be no weak links in our rules and their implementation. We need to put an end to dirty money infiltrating our financial system.”

That plan, he said, will be rolled out over the next 12 months.

Meanwhile, on a positive note, Guyana was one of six third world countries to be removed from the list.

Under EU law, banks and other financial institutions are required to scrutinize  clients who have dealings with countries on the list.
