A Monument For Sandra

By Newsroom

“Build a monument for Sandra”

This was the plea made by fellow calypsonian Marvelous Marva, as she spoke  at the funeral service for veteran calypsonian Singing Sandra at Queen’s Hall this morning.

Directing her words at Culture Minister Randall Mitchell, she said while those gathered today would never forget the late calypso queen for her indelible mark on T&T’s culture, it was important that generations to come also have a working memory and appreciation of her life’s work.

Singing Sandra, whose real name is Sandra Des Vignes-Millington, died last Thursday at the age of 64.

Meanwhile, also speaking at the service on Wednesday morning, Tourism and Culture Minister said government is currently in the process of implementing a National Cultural Policy with a view to ensure that artistes and other members of the fraternity are appreciated for their work.

“The policy which is laid in Parliament seeks to facilitate a thriving, inclusive and dynamic cultural environment. Put simply, the idea is to reward and encourage cultural and artistic expressions, recognizing that our artistes are constantly innovating,” Mitchell said.

Following today’s formal service, a cultural ceremony will also be held in honor of Sandra Des Vignes-Millington, at Hirondelle Street in Morvant tonight, with the official funeral service scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The two time Calypso Monarch will be laid to rest at the Tunapuna Cemetery.
