Business Chamber Tells RIC: Hold Hand On Increase In Electricity Rates

By Newsroom

The Couva/Point Lisas business chamber says while it understands the need to increase electricity prices, it believes such a move should be put on hold until alternative suggestions are available to the public.

In consultation with the Regulated Industries Commission, the Chamber recommended lowering gas cost by switching to renewable forms of energy, namely solar or wind power and investing in more steam generators.

“Even if the increase is made, both residential & commercial sector should be given a cheaper alternative first, so customers are given a fair choice. T&TEC has the monopoly on delivering electricity to the nation, we know this cannot be changed but like cellular service if there were other providers, we won’t be having these issues right now,” the business chamber said in a statement on Thursday.

It added: “It is our hope that all the consultations done with RIC and public is taken into serious consideration because the outcome of the current proposed rates can be devastating to the country if not managed properly.”
