Cabinet Appoints Independent Committee To Investigate Power Outage

By Newsroom

Cabinet has agreed to appoint an independent committee to conduct an in-depth  investigation into Wednesday’s island wide power shortage.

This is according to Energy Minister Stuart Young, who said the decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the National Security Council this morning.

Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales has said T&TEC will have to reassess its standby system to ensure that what happened across Trinidad yesterday, does not occur again. This as he noted the redundancy measures which were in place to avoid such a widespread outage, did not trigger as it should have.

Meanwhile, T&TEC’s Chairman Kelvin Ramsook says he “sincerely apologizes” for yesterday’s power outage which left most areas across Trinidad without electricity  for 12 hours.

Mr. Ramsook gave the assurance that the Commission did all in its power to have the matter resolved, deploying all of its technical staff at nearly every substation.

After starting work at 1:30pm on Wednesday, he said it was only about 7pm that they were able to regain some control at the Penal Power Station, which then put them in a position to bring supply to the other generating stations.
