Acting Commissioner of Prisons, Deopersad Ramoutar, has condemned the attempted assassination of Deputy Prisons Commissioner Sherwin Bruce at his Barataria home this morning.

Bruce managed to escape the ordeal without injury, however his driver, prison officer Steve Phipps was shot twice, in the chest and arm.

Commissioner Ramoutar said the incident was disappointing, given the inroads made in recent times to reduce tension between officers and inmates.

“My officers, we are very resilient and this brazen attack on us will not deter us from doing our duty. We will continue to maintain security and provide and implement strategies and programmes geared towards rehabilitation,” he said.

Saying that there are “just two handful of inmates” who are undesirables in the Prison Service, Prisons Commissioner Deopersad Ramoutar has urged other inmates to come forward with any information they may have regarding this morning’s assassination attempt.

Commissioner Ramoutar described the attack as cowardly, adding that the Prison Service is cooperating with the TTPS to find the perpetrators.
