Commission Of Inquiry Set Up To Investigate Divers’ Deaths, PM Scraps Five Man Committee

By Newsroom

A Commission of Inquiry is now to be set up to investigate the incident in which four divers lost their lives on the job, replacing the five-man committee initially announced by government.

It comes as Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says the committee was now a “waste of time” as the public has been “riled up to reject their work, even before they’ve done the job.”

He made the announcement during Tuesday night’s Conversations with the Prime Minister at the Bon Air West Community Centre.

Government will approach foreign experts, such as those used by Shell and BP.

The development also follows safety expert Eugene Tiah’s withdrawal from the committee earlier on Tuesday.

In a statement announcing his decision, Mr, Tiah said: “It appears the good of country is subservient to the shenanigans of a few.”

The Opposition has consistently questioned Mr. Tiah’s neutrality.
