Cop charged with being a gang member

A Police Officer and a Venezuelan national have both been charged with trafficking in persons and being a gang member, among other offences and are due to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate today.

The officer, Vicash Ramtahal, (right in photo) who was attached to the Central Division was slapped with five charges.

The Venezuelan, Julio Caesar,  and the officer have both been charged with Being a gang member, Supporting a gang in the commission of gang-related activity and Trafficking in persons (minors).

But  Ramtahal was also charged with Inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity and Misbehaviour in public office.

A second Police Officer who was arrested on Monday was released on yesterday pending further enquiries and the police say that other persons are expected to be arrested soon.

The exercise was conducted by members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), the Counter-Trafficking Unit, and a specialized team established by Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith.
