A man and his common-law wife were denied bail after they appeared virtually before a Mayaro Magistrate charged with a March 14th rape incident. They faced the court on May 8.
According to the TTPS:
The accused, both of Guayaguayare, are scheduled to reappear before the court on June 6th, 2023. They were charged on May 8th by PC Mc Knight, of the Mayaro Criminal Investigations Department (CID), after being on the hunt by police for allegedly falsely imprisoning and raping their teenage relative.
The charges include Rape, Grievous Sexual Assault, False Imprisonment and Incest. According to police reports, at 4.50 pm on March 13th, 2023, a teenager was allegedly invited to have a smoke with two relatives at a house in Guayaguayare.
A few moments later, the relative, detectives were told, was pulled into a room where the man locked the door. It is alleged that the man and his wife performed oral sex and sexual intercourse against the relative without the relative’s consent. The teenager also reported having made several unsuccessful attempts to escape.
The relative was allegedly restrained by the couple. The relative, however, managed to escape after an alarm was raised by another relative who was in search of the teenager and who discovered the alleged act.
The couple subsequently fled the scene and the police were contacted. Mayaro CID detectives, led by Sgt Mohammed, responded to the report and took the lead in investigations. The teenager was also taken for treatment. On May 8th, following further enquiries into several leads, the couple was located and arrested.
They were later charged with the offences.
