Crackdown On Corrupt Vehicle Inspection, Warns Transport Commissioner

By Newsroom

The electronic system for vehicle inspections has revealed several discrepancies within the Licensing Division which had been allowed to go unchecked for years.

It includes cases of duplicate chassis and number plates, and stolen vehicles passing inspection.

This is according to Transport Commissioner, Clive Clarke, who says it’s why stricter rules now require owners to bring their vehicles into testing stations or licensing offices for inspection.

“We also have issues in terms of typographical errors, duplicate chassis, resulting in when we do our due diligence checks, being stolen vehicles and knocked down vehicles…What is revealing itself here also, is that persons are basically cutting out chassis numbers and placing it into shells,” Clarke said.

Safeguards have also been effected to prevent employees of private testing stations from selling the new electronic stickers, Clarke said.

“On the date of the inspection, a photograph of the vehicle must be taken on that spot, we have certain markers that must show up on the system, we have persons in the office with access to the backend system (of private stations) who can look at any garage randomly and pinpoint and see if they are following the system,” Clarke said.
