Soon, the number of Covid-19 patients requiring care at the level of the Intensive Care Unit, will likely be beyond the number of beds available.
This is according to Principal Medical Officer Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards who warns that almost all ICU beds in Trinidad are occupied, with only three beds available.
In Tobago, there are only two remaining ICU beds available.
Dr, Abdool-Richards also indicated that there are nine COVID-19 patients receiving ICU care at the Accident and Emergency Departments of hospitals in the traditional healthcare system.
Speaking at Monday’s Covid-19 media conference, the PMO noted that some 96% of these ICU patients are unvaccinated, while 94.1% of all hospitalized Covid-19 patients were also unvaccinated.
The Ministry of Health is working to increase the ICU capacity, but even that contingency plan will have a cap due to a limited resources- including doctors.
