EBC defers pilot project in upcoming THA elections

By Shirvan Williams

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has abandoned its pilot project for parallel data collection at polling stations in the upcoming THA Elections. The project which was to be used as a new method of data collection was supposed to be implemented at polling stations in Scarborough/Mt. Grace and Mt. St.George/Goodwood.

The decision was taken after representatives of the Progressive Democratic Patriots, declined the invitation to attend a demonstration and maintained that the party was opposed to the EBC’s efforts.

“In light of this objection and as the EBC remains a committed partner to our democratic process, the Commission decided to defer the introduction of this initiative,” the Commission stated via a press release.

The project was aimed at how the proposed technology would work in tandem with the existing manual process and also that there would be no change in that manual process.

The release further stated that the plan may be revisited for the upcoming Local Government Elections in 2022 based on feedback from stakeholders.
