EBC: Nearly Half Of Tobagonians Stayed Away From Polls In THA Election

Just over half of Tobago’s voting population participated in yesterday’s Tobago House of Assembly election, which ended in a deadlock with the People’s National Movement and the Progressive Democratic Patriots each taking six seats.

The remaining 48.2% for one reason or another, did not show up at the polls. 

According to numbers from the Elections and Boundaries Commission, only 26,385 Tobagonians came out to the polls out of the 51,062 registered.

The People’s National Movement got 13,288 votes and the Patriotic Democratic Patriots received 12,798 votes.

The candidates for both the Class Action Reform Movement and the Unity of the People each received 9 votes.

Independent candidates Anthony Hector received 12 votes and Denise Tsoiafatt-Angus, 269 votes.

The PDP has requested recounts in the electoral districts of Canaan/Bon Accord, Lambeau/ Signal Hill and Scarborough/Calder Hall, while the PNM has requested a recount in the electoral district of Bethel/Mt. Irvine.

Meanwhile, in Trinidad, voter turn out for the local government bye-elections was significantly lower, with a meagre 25.7% of the population casting ballots in the five electoral districts.

With an electorate of 32,351 people,  there were 8,300 votes cast, with the PNM winning  3,941 votes and the UNC 3,359.

In the electoral district of Hindustan/St. Mary’s independent candidate Ariel Saunders received 653 votes and Peterson Morales, received 16 votes.

The United National Congress’ candidates won in the electoral districts of Arima Central, Cunupia and Hindustan/St. Mary’s. The People’s National Movement candidates won in the electoral districts of Hollywood and Morne Coco/Alyce Glen.
