ELECTION WATCH: Who Will Replace Fuad Khan In Race For Barataria/San Juan Seat?

By Newsroom

While the United National Congress (UNC) is yet to confirm a candidate to contest the Barataria/San Juan seat in the upcoming general election, some voices within the party’s quarters believe Senator Saddam Hosein is poised to take up the mantle.

After serving the Barataria/San Juan constituency for 23 years, MP Dr. Fuad Khan confirmed on Wednesday that he will not contest the seat in the upcoming general election, effectively bowing out of active politics. Khan, who is a urologist by profession, is expected to shift his focus to this area.

Khan made his decision known when he appeared before the party’s screening panel, lead by UNC Political Leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar.

Senator Hosein, an attorney at law by profession, was first appointed as a Senator in September of 2017.

Whomever the UNC chooses to replace the incumbent, will face their main competition from PNM newcomer to the political playground, Senator Jason Williams.

Dr. Khan is the most recent seasoned UNC MP to announce his decision to step back from the campaign trail. Earlier, Ganga Singh, Dr Surujrattan Rambachan and Dr Tim Gopeesingh signalled the end of their days in the Parliament.
