A female salvager at the Guanapo Landfill has died after being struck by an excavator at the site.

The incident happened shortly before 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, as confirmed in a statement from SWMCOL.

The landfill has been closed as police conduct an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, SWMCOL’a CEO Kevin Thompson said: “Words can’t express the grief I feel by this sudden loss of life and my prayers are with the friends and family of the deceased”. 

The company also reiterates to users of the nation’s landfills that caution should be exercised while on the premises.

“Staff are also urged to adhere to health and safety guidelines,” it said.
