FIFA Wants Five Substitutes Per Game

By Newsroom

The rules will be changed when football resumes.

Law 3 will be temporarily relaxed to allow for five substitutions per match to help players cope with the increase in the number of games. The proposal has been sent to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) which has to approve it before it can be implemented. Each team could make five substitutions during regulation time plus a sixth substitution during overtime”. It’s a precautionary measure since FIFA expects that when the competition resumes, after the COVID0-19 Pandemic lockdown the calendars will be overloaded with a higher than the usual number of matches.

Some leagues are planning to resume in early May and the measure could remain in force throughout the 2020-2021 season.
