Five Arrested and Two Firearms Seized, One Man Hospitalized After Police Shooting

The TTPS has disclosed that five suspects were arrested and two firearms and quantities of ammunition and drugs seized arising out of separate incidents, including a police-involved shooting.

According to the TTPS:

An intelligence-led operation was conducted in the North Central Divison between 12 midnight and 8 pm, on Tuesday 23rd January 2024, by North Central Division Gang and Intelligence Unit (NCDGIU) officers. During the exercise, officers responded to a report of robbery in the
Tunapuna district.

Upon arrival at the location in the vicinity of the Tunapuna Market, a male suspect allegedly pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers, who in keeping with the Use of Force Policy, discharged their firearms in the direction of the gunman who was shot and injured. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment.

A second suspect in a vehicle attempted to escape, but was held a short distance away.
One Smith and Wesson pistol loaded with a magazine containing 14 rounds of ammunition was seized from the scene. Meanwhile, in the Southern Division, Task Force officers conducted
an anti-crime exercise between 3 pm and 7 pm, yesterday, January 23, during which they arrested three persons for various offences.

Officers of the Canine Unit and other intelligence agencies assisted them. A 43-year-old San Fernando mason was arrested for possession of a pistol, seven rounds of ammunition and a quantity of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

A 31-year-old labourer of Palmiste, was held for possession of marijuana and a 23-year-old Venezuelan national was held for possession of quantities of cocaine and marijuana. Investigations are ongoing into the above matters.
