Fixed: Ras Shorty I Street Name Amended After Spelling Error

By Newsroom

More than two decades after his passing, Short Street in San Fernando has been renamed in honor of Ras Shorty I, the founder of soca and jamoo music.

The momentous occasion didn’t come without error, sadly, as Thursday’s unveiling of the new street sign saw the veteran’s name misspelt as ‘Shortie’. San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello posted an updated image of the signage on Friday morning with the correct spelling.

“Garfield Blackman aka Ras Shorty I, was born great as he was born with a gift and a talent. He achieved greatness by working hard coming from humble roots in the small village of Lengua in Princes Town to become renowned across the country in the art form of calypso and soca,” the Mayor said in a write up which failed to acknowledge the spelling faux pas,

“Through the recognition of his peers and the calypso fraternity, greatness was bestowed upon him. It is against this background that the San Fernando City Corporation is recognizing the contributions of this outstanding artiste by indelibly etching his name on the landscape of the City of San Fernando,” he added.
