France and Morocco To Face Off At World Cup Semifinal After Victorious Day

By Newsroom

Saturday’s end to the quarterfinal round of the 2022 World Cup saw Portugal and England being knocked out of the quest to the Semifinals.

Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, ending Portugal’s hope for this year.

Striker Youssef En-Nesyri scored the winning goal in the first half, leaping highest to beat goalkeeper Diogo Costa to the ball and heading in to spark pandemonium at Al Thumama Stadium.

The north African side’s supporters populated most of the venue and joyously celebrated their breakthrough moment on the global stage.

Ronaldo came off the bench in the 50th minute to equal the men’s all-time appearance record of 196 in international matches, but he could not drag his side back into the contest.

Meanwhile, in the later match between England and France, Aurelien Tchouameni broke the deadlock to score the first goal.

However, Tchouameni’s opener was dogged by controversy, with England aggrieved that a foul had not been awarded for a tackle on Bukayo Saka in the build-up.

England had the lions’ share of the chances and the ball after drawing level, but Olivier Giroud restored France’s lead against the run of play in the 78th minute with a booming near-post header.

Kane had the chance to keep England’s hopes alive for a second time, but he blazed a penalty wildly over the bar in the final minutes to condemn his country to another painful quarter-final defeat.

Morocco will face England in the last four, while Argentina and Croatia will play against each other.
