Government Has Change Of Heart, Students In Barbados And Jamaica To Be Allowed Home

Arrangements are being made to facilitate the return home for Trinidad and Tobago students at  the University of the West Indies Mona and Cave Hill campuses. 

At Monday’s virtual media conference, National Security Minister Stuart Young said the students will be allowed to return from Barbados and Jamaica by early June.

Initially, government had said the students will remain in place and care packages were sent to them by the Ministry of Finance.

In accordance with existing policy, Minister Young said the students will have to be quarantined 14 days before being allowed to fly home and will also be mandated to complete another two weeks in State quarantine upon their arrival.

He said his Ministry will continue to carefully monitor applications for exemptions. “We abandoned no nationals, including any students, wherever they are in the world. What we have done is managed, after advice from the medical personnel, the population here,” he said.
