Government Lobbies For World Steelpan Day

By Newsroom

Government, along with the Steelpan Trust of T&T and Pan Trinbago, are lobbying to the United Nations General Assembly to have August 7th declared as World Steelpan Day.

The announcement was made my Culture Minister Randall Mitchell, during Sunday’s opening of the new home for the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra.

“That is presently being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, and we look forward to our lobby and that application being made,” Minister Mitchell said.

As the $14million pan theatre, located at the corners of Nelson and George Streets, was handed over to the twelve-time Panorama champions, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley reflected on the importance of having such a facility in the capital city.

“We see POS as the main engine of the national community. A city that is alive and well and functioning properly becomes an integral part and remains an integral part of the economy of that nation,” Prime Minister Rowley said.

The facility, completed in just under two years, includes seating, the panyard, parking and a commercial building.
