Government To Go To Parliament Next Week To Fix “Error” In Procurement Act, PM Says

By Newsroom

Admitting there was an error in the recently passed Procurement Legislation, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says a Parliamentary sitting will be held next Wednesday to amend the law to include exemptions for the procurement of goods in unforeseen or emergency events.

Dr. Rowley made the announcement during a PNM meeting in Tunapuna on Thursday night.

It follows the Opposition’s criticism of government’s procurement of goods and services for last week’s Caricom summit.

“If we don’t pass a law to put sensible arrangements in place, TT will grind to a halt,” the PM said.

Under the present legislation, it takes just under two months to facilitate tenders, responses and the input of an advisory committee on procurement.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar has called a media conference for 11 o’ clock this morning, where it’s expected she will comment on the Prime Minister’s announcement.
