Grammys 2021: The Rundown and Winners/Nominees List

By Lillian Searles

The 63rd Grammy Awards was held last night in Los Angeles.

Hosted from the Los Angeles Convention Center by Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show”, the music awards show, traditionally billed as “music’s biggest night”, was different because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Performers were separated onto five stages to maintain social distancing, and there was no audience this year.

Beyoncé became the most-decorated woman in Grammys history with her 28th win.

“Black Parade” took the Best R&B Performance honors, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl,” which brought her grand total to 28 awards.

In an acceptance speech, she praised her 9-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who became the second youngest Grammy winner ever for her writing credit on “Brown Skin Girl.”

Beyoncé, who had nine nominations, the most of any artist in 2021, shared Best Rap Performance with Megan Thee Stallion for “Savage (Remix)”.

Megan Thee Stallion had a great night, being nominated for a total of four Grammys, and taking home the Best New Artist award and becoming the first female rapper to win that honor since Lauryn Hill in 1999.

Nigerian Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid both also won awards.

Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category while Wizkid won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.

Burna Boy, real name Damini Ogulu, a nominee for a second consecutive year, won with his Twice As Tall album.

Billie Eilish accepted the Grammy for Record of the Year for her song “Everything I Wanted” from presenter Ringo Starr, who made a rare appearance at the ceremony Sunday.

Surprised by the win, Eilish dedicated her award to Megan Thee Stallion. Eilish said the rapper deserved the award instead.

“This is really embarrassing for me … you deserve this,” Eilish told Megan Thee Stallion. “You had a year that was untoppable. You are a queen. I want to cry thinking about how much I love you. You are so beautiful. You are so talented. You deserve everything in the world.”

Eilish took home two Grammys out of her four nominations, including “Best Song For Visual Media” for her song “No Time To Die.”

Taylor Swift took home Album of the Year for Folklore, becoming the first female artist to win Album of the Year three times. She has won in the past for “1989” and “Fearless.”

Swift beat out Jhené Aiko, Black Pumas, Coldplay, Jacob Collier, HAIM, Dua Lipa and Post Malone for the award.

Dua Lipa‘s “Future Nostalgia” earned Best Pop Vocal Album honors.

The performer earned six nominations this year, in the Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Pop Solo Performance and Pop Performance by a Duo or Group categories, and performed “Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now” earlier in the evening.

Harry Styles also won his first Grammy for his solo effort “Watermelon Sugar,” which took home the Best Pop Solo Performance award. Styles was also nominated in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for “Fine Lines” and Best Music Video category for “Adore You.”
