By Newsroom

Five men, including two grandfathers, are expected to appear before Sangre Grande, Port-of-Spain and Scarborough Magistrates today to answer to various sexual assault charges against female minors.

This follows extensive investigations conducted by officers of the Child Protection Unit (CPU).

In the first incident, a male relative of an 11-year-old female victim reported to Northern Division CPU officers that, while passing by a bedroom window, he allegedly observed his brother sexually abusing their niece.

An investigation into the report was launched where it was discovered that the victim’s grandfather had also allegedly been abusing her since 2016.

The duo, aged 59 and 35, was subsequently arrested on Friday and will answer to the following charges today.

The grandfather was charged with eight counts of sexual touching of a minor while the child’s uncle was charged with one count of sexual penetration of a minor.

In another incident, North-Eastern CPU officers were made aware of an alleged assault of an 8-year-old female victim. This assault too was reportedly performed by her grandfather.

According to the victim, while having a shower, her grandfather came into the bathroom and proceeded to sexually assault her. The 77-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday.

The accused was charged with one count of sexual penetration of a minor and will answer when he appears before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate today.

North-Eastern CPU also conducted an investigation into a report of an alleged assault of a 17-year-old female victim by a male suspect.

In this case, the victim reported that while at the home of the 22-year-old man, an argument ensued which ended in a physical confrontation. The victim told police that when attempting to leave the home of the accused, he prevented her by choking and forcibly having sex with her.

WPC Ashby investigated the matter which culminated in the arrest of the suspect. The accused was slapped with two counts of sexual penetration of a minor, one count of false imprisonment and one count of choking.

He too will answer to the charges when he appears before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate today.

In another matter, Tobago CPU officers arrested a 28-year-old suspect following the alleged assault of a 15-year-old female victim which reportedly occurred sometime in March 2020.

Giving her account, the victim told police that while at her home, the accused came to her house and took her to the Bloody Bay Lookout.

There, she alleged, the man sexually assaulted her. An enquiry was conducted by WPC Jackson of the Tobago CPU who arrested and charged the suspect for one count of sexual penetration
of a minor.

He is expected to answer to the charge when he appears before a Scarborough Magistrate today.
