Here’s How Grenada Is Planning To Use Its Vaccination Program To Revive Carnival

Grenadians may not be able to enjoy their traditional Jab Jab mas and other official Carnival activities this year, but it’s possible some level of celebration could still go ahead- with vaccination leading the charge.

Grenadian Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell announced this week that his government is giving serious thought to granting private promoters the chance to host cultural activities leading up to what would have Spice Mas celebrations in August.

“If the promoters, for example are moving ahead and promoting cultural activities and people are vaccinated as a condition to be participants in the activity then certainly I think the Covid-19 Committee is looking closely at that,” he said.

Grenada, which has a population of roughly 112,000 people, currently has zero active Covid-19 infections.

This island reported only 161 cases and a single death since March 2020.

Still, PM Mitchell stressed that an “extremely careful” approach was necessary for any discussion about festive gatherings.

“For example, there might be in a small village- a group might want to play a certain mas and they are all vaccinated and they apply for permission, I think the work will be done and permission will be given if the vaccination component of the process,” he stated.

This is the second consecutive year that Grenada, like many other countries, have had to cancel their official Carnival celebrations due to the pandemic.

The country has administered at least 27,929 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to date.
