Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, has noted comments from a sitting Member of Parliament that the investigation into a so-called wire transfer transaction is far from over. The CoP wishes to emphasize that no politician has the authority to direct the police as to what investigation is to be conducted. Commissioner Griffith wishes to advise Dr. Roodal Moonilal that as far as the police are concerned, the case which he brought into the public domain in October 2018, is closed. The CoP said this investigation resulted in a waste of time and police resources. The CoP added, “Financial transactions include wire transfers. When a search is done with respect to financial transactions, it takes into account all transactions. Wire transfers carry both the originator and beneficiary’s account information. Once a transfer hits an account, it will show the originator’s account information. So to say one was only looking at bank accounts and not wire transfers is incomprehensible because the transfer has to hit an account. “Law enforcement must rely on the institution legally responsible to obtain financial intelligence. In this case, it’s the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) here in Trinidad and Tobago and all other FIUs around the world to which our FIU seeks information. “In the Extant matter, the Fraud Squad and the FIB would have sought the assistance of the FIU to acquire evidence of all financial transactions between the alleged parties, and no identifiable transactions connected the parties.
