Health Minister Condemns “Unfortunate” Implications Of Racial Bias

By Newsroom

The Ministry of Health has condemned what it says are inflammatory statements made by Wendell Eversley regarding the disciplinary action taken against Dr Avinash Sawh.

In a post which was shared to social media on Friday, Eversley drew comparison between the treatment meted out to Dr. Sawh for a racist rant which was caught on audio in 2021, and the case of an Afro-Trinidadian medical intern who was dismissed after using a derogatory term.

In a media release, the Ministry clarified that the Medical Board and Trinidad and Tobago- and not the Ministry- was responsible for deciding the disciplinary action to be taken against Dr. Sawh, whereas medical interns fall under its (the Ministry’s) purview.

It added that after careful consideration of all the relevant facts and the terms of the Intern Agreement, the interns all had similar outcomes.

“Therefore, any questions on the outcome of that inquiry should be put to the Medical Board. In fact, when the matter arose, the Ministry of Health lodged its complaint with the Medical Board,” it said. the Ministry said.
