How Ian Alleyne Woke Up the Quarantine Act

By Newsroom

The Quarantine Act came into focus at Wednesday’s news briefing when National Security Minister Stuart Young noted that “we have a real live situation that presented itself to us, read between the lines,” in reference to overnight confessions  from TV Talk Show Host, Ian Alleyne that he had tested positive for COVID-19. (See Video below). Strict patient confidentiality made is impossible for either the Minister of Health or the CMO to respond to media queries about Alleyne’s test status. But major news outlets have since confirmed that Alleyne indeed tested positive after a trip to Miami and is reported to be in hospital.  He is one of the 60 new cases reported by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday morning. A list of all the persons who entered the country in the past 14 days will be shared with the Trinidad Tobago Police Service who will be involved in monitoring them under the Quarantine Act. This according to Chief Medical Officer(CMO), Roshan Parasram who said 20,000 persons arrived in the country in that period  and should all be in self-quarantine. The enforcement of the Quarantine Act is the sole responsibility of the CMO who warned this morning, ‘”we will impose the Quarantine Act with the Police, around the clock.” A person in breach can be fined TT$6,000 or spend six months in prison. Their names have been placed on an Excel Sheet and has gone to the police, the CMO said at a news conference on Wednesday morning. Consequently the TTPS and the Defense Force to ensure the people stay at home. “If you don’t abide by the Quarantine Act, we will use the full force of the law. If needed, quarantine will be imposed at government facilities; police-involved quarantine measures also option at homes, and there’s also the option of imposing fines,” the CMO said In spite of the scare of community spread among the people with whom the TV personality had been in contact with, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh, was upbeat about the resources available, especially Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), for health care workers and the TTPS. The Current PPE stock includes: 13 million gloves, 150,000 disposable gowns, 23,000 shoe covers  and 180,000 head-ties.
