Hurricane Ian kills 12 in Florida

By Shirvan Williams

Hurricane Ian lashed Florida and continued to strengthen as it now moves toward South Carolina’s coast. The hurricane left at least a dozen people dead, knocked out power for millions and devastated communities across the state late yesterday evening, September 29.

Seven of the victims were from Charlotte County, near where Ian made landfall on Florida’s southwest coast Wednesday afternoon as a Category 4 hurricane.

President Joe Biden warned that Ian could be responsible for “substantial loss of life” and end up being the deadliest storm in Florida’s history.

“I spoke with the commissioners, and they are worried,” he added.

According to the most recent information, more than 2.2 million customers across Florida were still without power as of early this morning (Sept. 30) and 400,000 customers in Lee County alone are still in the dark.
