Jamaican Labour Party candidate, Daniel Lawrence, will approach the Magistrates Court requesting a second recount of last Thursday’s election results, after a recount of ballots led to a tie with his opponent, Luther Buchanan of the People’s National Party.
Lawrence was initially named the winning candidate for Westmoreland Eastern on Thursday night, however a recount saw a ties between both candidates.
Both parties secured 4,834 votes in the recount.
Buchanan was declared the winner after the Returning Officer broke the deadlock by pulling Luther Buchanan’s name from a box.
Under the law, where there is a tie, the Returning Officer must cast the deciding vote.
If the tie remains after a magisterial recount, the Returning Officer is required to cast the deciding vote again.
