Director of Pan-African Affairs at the Emancipation Support Committee, Khafra Kambon, is calling for Dr. Avinash Sawh to be decertified as a medical practitioner, over a recording of him making racist and derogatory statements which was leaked last week.
Mr. Kambon says the doctor’s behaviour would be abhorrent under any circumstances, but adds that given his profession, such racist convictions could become dangerous.
“Our concern about the reported outburst goes beyond the individual however. This is not the first such incident of a racist rant in the public domain that the country has experienced within the last few months. The post-election period produced some of the most inflammatory outbursts on social media, the most venomous and degrading of which were aimed at Africans,” Kambon said in a statement.
Hours before he was due to appear before the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday morning for a conduct assessment, Dr. Sawh publicly apologized for his statements.
“I have brought shame and embarrassment on my family, employers, community and profession. I now understand fully the damaging effect these statements can have on our multicultural society,” he said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday morning, held at his attorney, Martin George’s office in Port of Spain.
