Kamla: How Will NCC Spend Budget For ‘A Taste of Carnival’?

By Newsroom

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar is calling on the National Carnival Commission to explain, clearly, how it plans to spend the roughly $25 to $30million on this year’s Carnival festivities.

On Monday, NCC head Winston Gypsy Peters rolled out the list of events carded for “A Taste of Carnival 2022”.

But Persad-Bissessar questions whether alleged PNM affiliates will get an unfair advantage for contracts.

She was speaking at Monday night’s UNC Virtual forum.

“I want to ask the chairman of the North central Regional Authority Davlin Thomas, who also is the Deputy Chair of NCC. How many of these safe zones so-called fake zone events will put money in Davlin Thomas? Keep tune, let us see the events that they will be hosting and let us see what input this carnival man from NCC will have. Who else will benefit from this 30 million dollars?” she asked.

“I saw someone put up on Facebook today, some isolated little booths. Let us keep our eyes on that carnival because it is very close to us,” she added.

She was referring to the pod concept rolled out by the NCC, which will allow a maximum of 10 people to be grouped together within the safe zone events, to further discourage congregation.
