Kamla Persad-Bissessar: Opposition Prepared To Support Mask Legislation

By Newsroom

Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, says her party is prepared to support upcoming legislation to mandate the wearing of masks.

She was speaking at a press conference at President’s House, held shortly after she was officially appointed as Opposition Leader.

“We have not seen the legislation but in principle we have no objection to such legislation being passed in the Parliament,” Persad-Bissessar said, adding that the legislation will be dissected by her team once they have the written version.

The bill is expected to be the first legislation brought by government when the Twelfth session of the Parliament begins at 10:30am on Friday.

Tuesday’s ceremony and subsequent press briefing is the first time Mrs. Persad Bissessar has been seen publicly since her defeat at the polls on August 10th.

“This looks very intimidating” she said, smiling, as she approached the podium.

“Well I’ve been where I should be; the Health authorities advised us to stay put and that’s what I did,” she said, when asked about her absence.

She reaffirmed that she was in good spirits, once more dispelling claims that she had contracted COVID-19.

“I know people were asking about a photograph with myself and Dr. Gopeesingh but that photograph was taken way down- before. It was sometime in July, so it was more than a month I would say that I was on the truck and he was nearby… To the best of my knowledge I have no contact with anyone who has tested positive,” she said.
