Kamla: “Who Authorized Job Cuts At TTPS?”

By Newsroom

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has expressed concern over recent developments within the TTPS, including the recent decision to fire contract employees hired under former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith.

With no Commissioner of Acting Commissioner in place, the Opposition Leader questioned who authorized the restructuring exercise.

“The manner in which the Police Service Commission collapsed is already a scandal of the highest order, for which Rowley refuses to take responsibility. Now it appears Rowley is purposefully leading the entire Trinidad and Tobago Police Service down the path to a similar collapse,” she said.

She added the lack of a substantive head of the TTPS serves only to further demoralize officers, accusing government of creating a “ticking time bomb” in the police service.

Meantime, a statement from the TTPS says the service is “functioning optimally with the available resources”. Responding to concerns about Monday’s restructuring exercise in which contracted officers hired by former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith were terminated,  Deputy Commissioner of Police Mc Donald Jacobs said where necessary, new persons may be hired to fill vacancies.
