Mason charged with Murder

A 38-year-old man appeared before a Port of Spain Magistrate yesterday, September 26, charged with the Murder of Callis Gopaul which occurred on October 8th 2021 and Wounding with Intent against another man, which occurred on September 24th, 2021.

According to the TTPS, AKEBA AYRES, a mason, of Barrow Avenue, Bourg Mulatresse, was
charged with the offences, when he appeared before Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor, on Monday 27th September, 2022.

The matter was adjourned to October 28th, 2022 and transferred to the Port of Spain Eight Magistrates’ Court.

“Reports indicate, Gopaul, 39, a construction worker of San Juan, was involved in a physical altercation with a man on September 24th, 2021, during which he was allegedly stabbed with an icepick. Another man intervened to assist the victim and he too was stabbed about his body by the assailant who then fled the scene.

The injured men were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment where Gopaul was warded and later succumbed to his injuries on October 8th, 2021. The other victim
was treated and discharged. One male suspect was arrested on September 20th, 2022 following investigations into the matter.”

Investigations were supervised by Insp. Ramjag, Insp. Sylvester and Cpl (Ag.) Jones, all of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI), Region Two.

Ayres was charged with the two offences by WPC Elcock, also of the HBI Region Two, following advice received from Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Nigel Pilgrim, on Friday 23rd September 2022.
