Migrant Baby Yaelvis Laid To Rest

By Newsroom

Yaelvis Jose Santollo Sarabia, the Venezuelan baby boy who was fatally shot in the head by T&T Coast Guard officers at sea two weeks ago, has been laid to the rest.

The child’s father was present at the service at the Church of Nazarene in Arima today, however his mother, who was holding him when he was shot, remains in hospital as she was also wounded during the incident.

Two Saturdays ago, Coast Guard officers were on patrol on the South Coast of Trinidad when they said the boast carrying the migrants attempted to ram into them as they tried to intercept.

“All available methods were used including the use of the loud hailer, ship’s horn, searchlight and flares, to try to get the suspect vessel to stop, however, the vessel continued to attempt to evade TTS Scarborough. In keeping with standard protocols, warning shots ahead of the vessel were next employed,” the Coast Guard statement said.

The statement said the officers had been unaware, at the time they fired the shots, that there were migrants on board.
