More Criticism For Kamla As NGO Accuses UNC Leader Of “Playing Victim”

By Newsroom

Pressure continues to mount on UNC leader Kamla Persad Bissessar following last Friday’s public call out by one of her sitting MPs, Dinesh Rambally.

The Chaguanas West MP painted a worrying picture about the behind-the-scenes state of the party under Persad-Bissessar’s leadership, which the UNC leader has since dismissed as political mischief.

But Activist group, The Compass Foundation, in a statement on Sunday, accused Persad-Bissessar of projecting “a facade of victimhood”, adding that the real victims are party supporters who seek a transparent, democratic, and respectful political environment.

“Despite professing commitment to democratic principles, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar’s actions, including derogatory remarks and contradictory statements, paint a picture of selective adherence to party rules and a lack of transparency. Furthermore, her failure to address gendered attacks within the party and her manipulative use of culture and identity politics raise concerns about her leadership,” the Foundation said.

It added, “The portrayal of Mrs. Persad-Bissessar as a victim is not only inaccurate but also undermines genuine abuse narratives within the party. As the political leader, she must be held accountable for her track record, including electoral defeats and a lack of transparency regarding internal elections.”

The Foundation also issued a call for an apology to be given to Opposition members including Rushton Paray, Anita Haynes, Rodney Charles, Rai Ragbir, and Dinesh Rambally for what it says are “unwarranted attacks” they have faced over their calls for internal elections to be held when constitutionally due.
