More than 1000 Dead Following Powerful Earthquake in Morocco

By Shirvan Williams

Three days of national mourning have been declared in Morocco after an overnight earthquake killed more than 1,000 people. The quake – measuring magnitude 6.8 – sent people rushing into the streets in Marrakesh and other cities.

Many of the deaths were said to be in hard-to-reach mountain areas. The quake struck just after 11 pm time, at a relatively shallow depth of 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, according to the US Geological Survey. Dramatic video footage shows damaged buildings and rubble-strewn streets.

According to AP News, the magnitude-6.8 quake is the biggest to hit the North African country in 120 years. At least 1,204 people were injured, Morocco’s Interior Ministry reported earlier today. The ministry wrote that 721 of the injured were in critical condition.
