More Than 9,000 SEA Students Scored Below 50%. Roughly 2,700 Registered For Ministry’s Remedial Classes

The Ministry of Education is making an appeal for parents and guardians of children who scored below 50% in this year’s SEA examination, to consider taking advantage of its Vacation Remedial Program, aimed at bridging the learning gap.

The program, which begins on Monday, has so far seen only 2,700 students signing up.

The Vacation Revision Programme will be held at 33 centres across Trinidad, running until August 12th, 2022.

Walk-in registration of students for the VRP will be permitted during the week of July 18th -22nd.

The program will provide support in the form of targeted revision in Mathematics, English Language Arts and Writing. Students will also partake in activities such as music and drama, and all students will be provided with breakfast and lunch over the course of the programme.

Of the 19, 079 students who sat the exam this year, only 37.06% scored above 50%.

In 2021, the percentage was 52.49.

At the time results were released on July 1st, Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly said the statistics were reflective of the loss of learning during virtual learning, which was started in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This particular cohort who wrote SEA in 2022 would have been engaged in online learning for the past 2 years, they would have been in their second term in standard three when schools closed.” Minister Gadsby-Dolly said during a media conference on the day results were released.

“The review process offers students the process of being transferred to their secondary school of choice if their score is upgraded,” she added.
