The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts has confirmed that the National Emblems of Trinidad and Tobago (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was unanimously passed in Parliament.
The national emblems including Christopher Columbus’ ships, the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria will be replaced by the steelpan. The bill was piloted by Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Randall Mitchell, and was unanimously passed in the House of Representatives during its 13th Sitting – 5th Session, yesterday January 13, 2025.
The Ministry said:
“This groundbreaking Bill will replace the representation of Columbus’ ships on our Coat of Arms (established in 1962) with our National Treasure – the Steelpan, our official National Musical Instrument.
“This is a proud milestone for Trinidad and Tobago, as we continue to celebrate and promote our rich cultural heritage and identity while making our mark on history.”
