New School Year Begins Today, Migrant Children To Attend Classes

By Newsroom

Students and teachers are back out to school today, for the start of a new academic year.

The new term will also see the inclusion of just over 100 migrant children in the classroom, in what is the Education Ministry’s first phase of its integration program.

Only children of migrants who are in this country legally will be accepted in the school system.

Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has said that her ministry has been working with various local and international agencies since 2019, including the Living Water Community, the Catholic Education Board (CEBM) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), on the plan to incorporate migrants into schools.

Several teachers have already been trained and the final legal arrangements are being worked out by the Immigration Division and the Attorney General’s office.
