The country has recorded a gruesome statistic as the Ministry of Health has revealed that a baby has died because of the covid19 pandemic. The Ministry revealed the news that the newborn girl was one of the 19 people who died of the virus over the past 24 hours. They have also revealed that four newborn babies are infected with the virus.

The 801 cases reported from samples taken between December 3 and 5 is the highest number ever to be recorded on a Monday considering that testing numbers are usually lower on the weekend. According to the Health Ministry, 89.8 per cent, or 6,408 of 7,134 patients, currently in the parallel healthcare system were unvaccinated.

The Health Minister, Terrence Deyalsingh, also announced that steps were being taken to boost the parallel health care system.

“We initially had 188 beds (in step-down facilities) and we have started to increase it by 154. We are going to take our step-down facilities up to 342 beds…almost doubling the number. What that means is that we can step down patients more quickly from ward levels at our hospitals and make more room for ward-level care,” he explained.
